The ZeroPollution4Water cluster has released its first Joint Policy Brief, presenting key insights and actionable recommendations to safeguard surface and groundwater quality while ensuring safe drinking water provisions across Europe.

This policy brief consolidates contributions from seven EU-funded projects—NINFA, SafeCrew, Mar2Protect, H2OforALL, ToDrinQ, UPwater, and intoDBP—focused on addressing diffuse pollution, developing innovative technologies, and supporting the EU’s Zero-Pollution Strategy and Green Deal goals.

Structured into two parts, the policy brief outlines:

  • Benefits of each project for achieving the Zero-Pollution Strategy objectives.
  • Initial insights from the intoDBP and H2OforALL projects, offering solutions for water management challenges.

The brief builds on discussions held during the cluster’s inaugural meeting in October 2023 in Brussels and highlights the urgency of tackling diffuse pollution, which affects 35% of EU groundwater bodies. It further stresses the importance of protecting groundwater, a source of 65% of Europe’s drinking water, from pollution exacerbated by climate change.

Through advanced prevention strategies, innovative technologies, and collaborative efforts, the ZeroPollution4Water cluster is committed to achieving a Water-Smart Society aligned with the EU’s Zero-Pollution Action Plan.
