On May 26th 2025, DCU hosted a key meeting for the intoDBP Irish Case Study Board, bringing together representatives from the National Federation of Group Water Schemes, Committee Members from case study Group Water Schemes in Co.
Mayo alongside stakeholders from Úisce Eireann (National Regulated Water Utility) and LAWPRO (Local Authority Waters Programme). The meeting provided an overview of the issues relating to organic matter impact on disinfection by-product (DBP) formation in drinking water. In addition, attendees were also provided with a summary of information collated thus far on source water protection methods for the reduction of organic matter inputs to raw water and an introduction to the modelling framework developed as part of the project for forecasting organic matter in Irish source waters.
In addition, the meeting was used as a discussion forum where useful data was collated on the feasibility of source water protection measures and assessment of stakeholder needs and requirements in relation to the development of a risk assessment tool for planning and mitigation of DBP formation at source. This data will help guide the project and develop recommendations for the mitigation of DBP in source water. This format resulted in a day of important collaboration with open discussions and feedback between both stakeholders and researchers.
